چکیده

[1] We perform intermittency analyses on the electric field data obtained by the SIERRA sounding rocket in the auroral zone. The electric field fluctuations are broadband, covering the extremely low-frequency range with a power-law relation, similar to the type of fluctuations commonly observed at various altitudes of the auroral region. Our preliminary analyses of the data based on the technique of probability distribution functions indicate that the electric field fluctuations are intermittent in the spacecraft frame. Using the methods of wavelet analyses and local intermittency measures, we determine the degree of intermittency of the fluctuations at various scales. It is found that the electric field fluctuations are more intermittent at smaller scales. Citation: Tam, S. W. Y., T. Chang, P. M. Kintner, and E. Low-frequency electric field fluctuations and field-aligned electron beams around the edge of an auroral acceleration region

Electron beams narrowly collimated to the magnetic field line were observed continuously from a downward current region to an auroral acceleration region (i.e., upward current region). They were well correlated with lowfrequency electric field fluctuations in the auroral acceleration region as well as in the adjacent downward current region. Magnetic field fluctuations were found only in the do...

Rank-ordered multifractal analysis for intermittent fluctuations with global crossover behavior.

The rank-ordered multifractal analysis (ROMA), a recently developed technique that combines the ideas of parametric rank ordering and one-parameter scaling of monofractals, has the capabilities of deciphering the multifractal characteristics of intermittent fluctuations. The method allows one to understand the multifractal properties through rank-ordered scaling or nonscaling parametric variabl...

Electrospinning of Polyacrylonitrile Nanofibers and Simulation of Electric Field via Finite Element method

Objective(s): Since the electric field is the main driving force in electrospinning systems, the modeling and analysis of electric field distribution are critical to the nanofibers production. The aim of this study was modeling of the electric field and investigating the various parameters on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers morphology and diameter. Methods:</st...

Laboratory studies of field-aligned density striations and their relationship to auroral processes*

Magnetic field-aligned structures in current, density, and temperature are common features of the auroral ionospheric plasma. These structures both generate and transform low frequency waves in the plasma. The results of laboratory studies of two processes involving magnetic field-aligned density depletions ~striations! that play a role in auroral plasma dynamics are presented. The first proces...

A comparison of satellite scintillation measurements with HF radar backscatter characteristics

We examine the correspondence between high latitude ionospheric scintillation measurements made at 250 MHz with the occurrence of 10 MHz HF coherent radar backscatter, on 13 and 14 December 2002. We demonstrate that when the ionospheric intersection point of the scintillation measurements is co-located with significant HF radar backscatter, the observed scintillation, quantified by the S4 index...
